The Legend about the Importance of Amarnath Cave

Amarnath Cave holds great spiritual significance in Hindu mythology. It is believed to be the sacred place chosen by Lord Shiva (Bhole Shankar) to reveal the secrets of immortality and the creation of the universe to Goddess Parvati.

The Amar Katha of Shree Amarnath Ji

According to ancient legends, Maa Parvati once asked Lord Shiva the reason behind His wearing of a garland made of human skulls (Mund Mala). Each time she was reborn, she saw one more skull added to the garland. Intrigued, she asked Lord Shiva to reveal the mystery.

Lord Shiva replied, “Every time you are born, I add another skull to my garland. My body may perish again and again, but I am immortal. This is the truth I want you to understand.”

Bhole Shankar replied that it is due to Amar Katha

Maa Parvati was determined to know the secret of immortality. After much insistence, Lord Shiva decided to share the Amar Katha—the divine tale of immortality. To ensure no living creature could overhear this sacred knowledge, He chose a secluded and peaceful place: the holy Amarnath Cave in the Himalayas.

On His journey to the cave, Lord Shiva left behind all His companions. He let go of His divine bull, Nandi, at Pahalgam (also known as Bail Gaon), released the Moon from His matted hair at Chandanwari, and left behind the five elements (Panch Tatva) along the route. At Sheshnag Lake, He released the snakes, and finally, He left His son, Lord Ganesha, at Mahagunas Parvat (Mahaganesh Hill). Only Maa Parvati accompanied Him to the sacred cave, where Lord Shiva narrated the immortal Amar Katha.
